SNP slammed for failing to give Glasgow a fair deal
October 27th, 2008 | by martin.rhodes |Maryhill MSP Patricia Ferguson has called on the Scottish Government to provide more funding to Glasgow to address the problems faced by the city. Over recent years Glasgow has seen a significant drop in the unemployment statistics and a consequent rise in the number of people in work. Over the same period housing standards in the city have improved and new schools are being built. We can see evidence of this throughout our local communities. There is still, however, a lot to be done. The SNP Government recently indicated that it considered Edinburgh to be a special case in terms of the funding which should be available to it because of the ‘extra demands’ placed on it. Given the additional significant demands Glasgow faces, in relation to the levels of deprivation which the City suffers from, Patricia Ferguson took the opportunity to ask the SNP Minister whether he would recognise Glasgow’s needs and make additional funding to our city too. Unfortunately the answer was no.
Patricia Ferguson commented: “I am very disappointed with the Government’s response, particularly at a time when local organisations delivering vital services in our area face funding cuts and will continue to pursue to this to make sure that our local communities and communities throughout Glasgow get a better deal from the SNP Government.”
