MSP criticises inadequate SNP plan for factoring

Maryhill MSP, Patricia Ferguson has expressed her surprise and disappointment at the SNP Government’s announcement of plans to introduce an inadequate voluntary accreditation scheme for property managers.

The SNP announcement comes only weeks after the Office of Fair Trading confirmed that it is to carry out an investigation into the issue of property factors and property management in Scotland, and whilst the Maryhill MSP is carrying out detailed analysis of the responses received to her consultation on a proposal to introduce legislation to regulate property managers and to provide an accessible form of mediation for owners of factored properties and their property managers.

Commenting on the announcement Patricia Ferguson MSP said: “Given the ongoing work on this important matter I am surprised and disappointed that the SNP Government has announced plans to introduce an industry-led, voluntary accreditation scheme.  This proposal does not go far enough as factors will not be required to sign up to the scheme and I believe it would have been better if they had waited for the outcome of the OFT study. What is being proposed is little more than already exists.”
