About the Labour Party
The Labour Party is a democractically structured, socialist party founded in 1900 to give working people representation in Parliament. It’s agenda today is still central to ordinary working people and it is made up of members and activists who believe strongly that it is important to stand up for social justice - that the the principal of justice ought to be central to organizing society. Labour supporters seek to fight the inequalities that exist in society; to demand fair conditions and wages for people at work, and to build up strong democratically accountable public services. The Party was founded by the Trade Union movement and like-minded socialist societies.
The Labour Party is a democratic socialist party. It believes that by the strength of our common endeavour we achieve more than we achieve alone, so as to create for each of us the means to realise our true potential and for all of us a community in which power, wealth and opportunity are in the hands of the many, not the few. Where the rights we enjoy reflect the duties we owe. And where we live together, freely, in a spirit of solidarity, tolerance and respect.”
– Clause IV of the Labour Party Constitution

The Labour Party and Policy
Labour Party members can contribute to developing policies. Today the Labour Party formulates policy through a process called ‘Partnership in Power’. PiP operates by collating ideas from consultation meetings called ‘Policy Forums’ which analyze issues and debate the solutions in workshops. When you’re a member of the Labour Party you can attend a local Policy Forum and even develop local manifestos which can be influenced by your interest and knowledge on the subject or your professional or vocational expertise. Policy Forum meetings can also be informed by reviewing the possible solutions to problems and issues experienced by local people.

What makes Labour distinctive?
- Labour takes important steps to assist everyone who sells their labour for a wage or salary. Since coming to power in Britian, Labour has instituted tax rebates (known as Tax Credits) which are vital to the affordability of the working lives of many millions of people. We’ve worked hard to make employment a real option for those who were forsaken by years of Tory misrule and we’ve challenged the worst extremes of low pay with our National Minimum Wage. Labour can only build and strengthen economic justice with your support.
- Labour seeks to ensure high standards and equality in health. Labour’s National Health Service is still today the envy of those who struggle to pay for costly treatment and high insurance premiums in other countries. Labour, which founded the NHS, has kept up high levels of investment in your healthcare system. Labour can only secure the future of the Health Service with your support.
- Labour believes that education is the key to everyone’s fulfilment. Our Education Maintainence Allowances (EMAs) have helped young people to afford to stay on in edcuation. We’ve spent record sums making our schools and their resources fully up-to-date. Labour can only make a Scottish Education the best in the world with your support.
These are just some examples of the platform upon which Labour stands. Labour relys upon its members to help win elections and contribute to policy.
